How to Add, Edit & Delete Homes

This guide explains, in plain language, how to add, edit, and delete homes on the website, along with the Locations and Home Types used to organise them. No technical knowledge is needed — everything below is done from the normal WordPress admin screens.

Where to Find Everything

Log in to the site’s admin area and look at the black menu down the left-hand side. Click Properties — this is the section for everything related to homes. Inside it you’ll find:

  • All Properties — the full list of homes on the site
  • Add New Property — create a brand new home
  • Locations — the list of destinations (e.g. Naivasha, Diani)
  • Home Types — the list of home styles (e.g. Chalet, Villa)
  • Amenities — the list of features homes can have (e.g. WiFi, Swimming Pool)

Adding a New Home

Click Properties > Add New Property, then work down the page filling in each section. You don’t have to fill in every single field — anything left blank simply won’t be shown on the home’s page.

  1. Title — the name of the home, at the very top of the page.
  2. Description — the main text box below the title. Write the home’s description here. Use the “Heading” option in the “+” menu to add section headings like “Overview” or “The Grounds”, and “Paragraph” for the text underneath each one.
  3. Location and Home Type — on the right-hand side of the screen, tick the destination and the home style that apply.
  4. Amenities — further down the right-hand side, tick every feature the home has.
  5. Short Summary — a single sentence describing the home, shown on the small preview cards around the site.
  6. Pricing — the nightly rate in KES for residents and in USD for non-residents, plus any optional extra fees (weekend rate, cleaning fee, deposit, etc.) if they apply.
  7. Property Info — number of guests, bedrooms, bathrooms and beds, check-in and check-out times, minimum stay, and House Rules.
  8. Location Info — the county, town or area, an optional Google Maps link, and nearby attractions.
  9. Featured Image — the main photo for the home, found in the box on the right-hand side. Click “Set featured image” and choose or upload a photo. This is the photo used on preview cards across the site.
  10. Property Gallery — the full set of photos for the home’s own page, in its own box on the page. Click “Add Images” to choose or upload as many as you like.
  11. Featured Property — a toggle switch near the top right. Turn this on only if you want the home to appear in the homepage’s Featured Homes section.
  12. Publish — once everything looks right, click the blue Publish button in the top right corner. The home is now live on the website.

Good to know: the homepage only ever shows the 6 most recently featured homes at once. If you feature a 7th home, the oldest featured one quietly drops off the homepage grid — it stays live and featured on its own page, it just won’t appear in that homepage section any more.

Good to know: when typing House Rules or Nearby Attractions, put each one on its own line (press Enter between each), rather than writing them as one long sentence. The website automatically turns each line into its own neat bullet point.

Editing an Existing Home

  1. Go to Properties > All Properties.
  2. Click the name of the home you want to change.
  3. Make your changes anywhere on the page, exactly as described above.
  4. Click the blue Update button in the top right corner to save your changes.

Deleting a Home

  1. Go to Properties > All Properties.
  2. Hover your mouse over the home you want to remove.
  3. Click the Trash link that appears underneath its name.

This moves the home to the Trash rather than deleting it right away — it will disappear from the website immediately, but you can still recover it. To permanently delete it, open the Trash tab at the top of the Properties list, then click Delete Permanently underneath it. This step cannot be undone.

Adding a New Location

  1. Go to Properties > Locations.
  2. On the left-hand side, type the destination’s name (e.g. “Malindi”) into the Name field.
  3. Optionally, scroll down and add a Destination Image — this is the photo shown on the homepage’s “Browse by Destination” cards.
  4. Click the Add New Location button.

The new location will now be available to select whenever you add or edit a home.

Editing a Location

  1. Go to Properties > Locations.
  2. Click the name of the location you want to change, in the list on the right.
  3. Update the name or the Destination Image as needed.
  4. Click Update.

Deleting a Location

  1. Go to Properties > Locations.
  2. Hover your mouse over the location you want to remove, in the list on the right.
  3. Click the Delete link that appears, then confirm.

Please be careful here: deleting a location does not delete any homes — but any home that was tagged with that location will simply lose that tag, and its destination will show as blank. Before deleting a location, it’s worth checking whether any homes are still using it, and updating them first.

Adding, Editing & Deleting a Home Type

Home Types (Villa, Chalet, Cottage, and so on) work in exactly the same way as Locations — just under Properties > Home Types instead. Add a new one the same way (with an optional Home Type Image instead of a Destination Image), edit one by clicking its name, and delete one the same way — with the same caution: any home using that home type will lose the tag if it’s deleted.

A Few More Good-to-Know Tips

  • Featured Image vs Photo Gallery: the Featured Image is the one photo used everywhere a home appears as a small card (homepage, Browse Homes). The Photo Gallery is the fuller set of photos shown on the home’s own page.
  • Amenities work the same way as Locations and Home Types — under Properties > Amenities — if you ever need to add one that isn’t in the tick-list yet.
  • Nothing is truly instant: after clicking Publish or Update, give the page a moment, then open the home’s page on the live site to double-check everything looks right.
  • If you’re ever unsure whether a change worked, it’s always safe to simply look at the live website — nothing is saved until you click Publish or Update.
